Water extraction is the part of a water loss that cannot wait. Every hour standing water sits, it moves further into subfloor, wall cavity and insulation, and the difference between a room that dries and a room that gets rebuilt is usually decided before anyone sets up a single fan.

Where the standing water usually comes from
Extraction jobs arrive from a short list of failures, and the source matters because it decides how clean the water is and therefore what can be dried rather than thrown away.
A supply line that let go while nobody was home
A braided line under a sink or behind a washing machine fails at full pressure and does not stop until somebody closes a valve. This is the highest-volume source there is: clean water, but hours of it, and it finds the lowest floor in the building. The water is Category 1 at the moment it escapes and does not stay that way indefinitely.
A water heater at the end of its life
Tanks fail from the bottom, usually into a closet or a garage with no drain and a door sill holding the water in. Fifty gallons arrives at once and then keeps arriving from the supply until the tank is isolated. The standing water is often deeper than it looks because it has spread under a floor covering.
Storm water that got in and had nowhere to go
Water entering through a roof, a window or a door threshold pools on the lowest level and sits there. Unlike a supply-line failure this water has been outside, so what it has picked up on the way in decides the category, and that decides which materials can be extracted and dried rather than removed.
A backed-up drain or sewer line
Water coming back up a drain is Category 3 from the first minute, which changes the job from extraction into extraction plus disposal. Porous materials it has touched are not dried and kept, and the pumping equipment and the route it takes out of the building both have to be handled differently.
A sump pump that stopped during the one storm that mattered
Sump failures are found by the water rather than by the pump, usually at the worst possible time, and a basement or crawl space fills from the bottom up. The standing water is what is visible; how far it has wicked up wall material is what decides the scope once it has been pumped out.

Water extraction questions we get asked
Do I need water extraction if the floor already looks dry?
Often, yes. Standing water disappears from the surface long before it leaves the subfloor, the wall base and the insulation behind it, and those are the materials that decide whether a room is dried or rebuilt. The check is a meter reading, not a look at the floor, and it costs nothing to have someone take one.
How much water can you actually extract?
Our trucks carry high-capacity extraction equipment, moisture detection tools, air movers and dehumidifiers to the job rather than fetching them the next day. What we will not do is give you a gallons-per-hour figure over the phone: the honest answer depends on depth, on what the water is sitting on, and on how the equipment reaches it.
Is water extraction the same as water damage restoration?
Extraction is the first part of it. Getting the standing water out is one job; drying the structure to a measured target and repairing what the water ruined is the rest, and it is set out on our water damage restoration page. The same company does both, which is why nobody hands you off partway through.
Can you extract water from carpet and pad, or does it come out?
It depends on the category of the water and how long it sat. Clean water caught early can often be extracted and the carpet dried in place; water that has been standing, or that came back up a drain, usually means the pad goes and sometimes the carpet with it. We tell you which one it is before anything is cut.
What should I do before the extraction crew arrives?
Stop the water if you can reach the valve safely, and leave the power alone if the water is anywhere near an outlet or a panel. Lift what you can lift without walking through standing water. Photograph the room before anything moves, because that photograph is worth more to your claim than anything taken afterwards.
Is the estimate really free?
Yes. We come out, tell you what we find and what the job involves, at no cost and with nothing owed if you decide not to go ahead. Nothing starts until you say so.
